It Just Occurred To Me...

After reading wisteria_'s thread about the most hated words in fanfic, that being new to the craft, I should take copious notes; write down each and every hated word and vow NEVER to use them, ever again, so that my fics will be read and enjoyed by one and all.

Turns out, the only words left to be used were:

Buffy and Spike
Spike and Angel
William/Angelus

as these are my pairings of choice. **pouts** Makes for a damned short story, but at least it'll be to the point.

I saw many things/words that I've been guilty of using. I believe I used the word 'cerulean' before. I know, 'blue' is perfectly acceptable, but for God's sake, you can only use it so often before it bores. And, I am fond of the word 'lover'. I just like it.

Word I hate using: Naked. It's not attractive and I don't like the way it sounds.

Phrase/descriptor I will try not to use again: Vanilla (-scented).

I had to go check out that thread after I saw your post, and it was hilarious. I had noticed, and been annoyed by, alot of them. Especially "vanilla-scented" (I even mentioned it in a reply to Moxie's post about cliches) and "blood tears" (when have any of the vamps in Whedonverse ever cried blood tears?).

Some of the others wouldn't be so bad if they weren't overused, but some of the words on that list were hilarious. Thanks for mentioning the post, I thouroughly enjoyed it. :)

I say, ignore everything that everyone else ever says. I've tried to read advice by people before and got so pissed off I decided never to do it again.

Everyone has their way of writing and if we all wrote to a set template it'd be damn boring!

Heh. No kidding. I think the vast majority of those words are more "handle with care" than NEVER EVER USE FOR THEY ARE TEH EVAL BADFIC!!! In the hands of good writer, there should be no singular word that's off-limits. (There's plenty of words on the list, for example, that don't really belong in sex scenes but are perfectly appropriate in other places. Some can even fit fine into sex scenes, provided they're not overused and the rest of the scene doesn't suck.) I may have to make a post about this myself.

While I am guilty of using a few of the *dreaded* never to be used in fanfic terms, I think when used in certain situations and not thrown in all over the place, most words can be acceptable.

But that's just me...
